China’s Health Ministry has ordered a hospital to stop using electric shock therapy to cure youths of Internet addiction, saying there was no scientific evidence it worked.

Linyi Mental Health Hospital in eastern Shandong province used the treatment as part of a four-month program that has so far treated nearly 3,000 youths, the China Youth Daily newspaper has reported, citing the psychiatrist who runs it, Yang Yongxin.

The ministry said in a statement posted on its Web site late Monday there is no domestic or international clinical evidence that electric shock therapy helps cure Internet addiction. Electric shock therapy is most often used to treat severe depression.

It is no secret that internet use can be 'abused'.

People fall in love, make money, find friends, get an education, enjoy self-sex(wink) and on and on!

All of these are traps and yes they can end up in a complete control of ones life …hence the label..abused!

Like anything in life there is a necessary balance.
Before the internet came along any personality that had an addictive bend to it was having no problem finding something to abuse.

The Internet is just one more to add to previous addictions such as: alcohol, food, sex, stealing, violence, chaos, drugs, Gamers.. ect (not necessarily in that order)

I am surprised at how much I am hearing about China and its move toward controlling their Internet availability when you would think they would focus on more immediate issues such as Government issues, population, pollution, slavery, prostitution, sex clubs, strip bars ect.

Somehow I am not surprised that China would try something like this as a means of control. It's like the film One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest with Jack Nicholson. If China had continued they would have had a rebellion prehaps, or of they had not stopped they could have had streets filled with roaming androids with no emotions, thoughts or feelings other than what their government deemed appropriate. Well, the net is out the bag and there is no putting it back in. Deal with it, China.
