This is something that most people neglect to do, if they are cash poor because they are often afraid that there will be too many checks and balances to be funded. In lots of cases there are angel investors as well. Think of Kiva. it’s primarily small lenders lending to small projects and usually one person businesses.

This is the model that we’re going to see arising in the new world economy. so we better get used to it. Women can take a little of nothing and work with it until they have enough, if they know how. This is why today we’re focusing on Women and  Micro Businesses.

For this school project I was entirely inspired by FABRICA and its “Microcredit Afrika Works” project.

This is going to be the new American model very soon.  Mark my words, community groups will begin to again form cooperatives and buy their food. Then they will share in the resources of energy creation and resale; as well as a common income source, such as a market to sell the excess produce and products of the various members involved.

We think that instead of talking about what’s wrong in America – maybe we should be The Fixers – and Re-Build Our Economy. (remember it was the decider who mucked it up)

I see the Amish ladies at the market on saturday selling out. they bring a van full of baked goods and snacks and leave with a apron full of money.  They rarely smile, but they are the nicest women. take a look at our chat with them from this spring in Detroit’s Eastern Market.

Google boss Eric Schmidt warns on social use of media

Young people may one day have to change their names in order to escape their previous online activity, Google boss Eric Schmidt has warned.

Mr Schmidt told the Wall Street Journal he feared they did not understand the consequences of having so much personal information about them online.

The firm has been busy bolstering its social networking presence recently.

Google has acquired Slide and Jambool, two firms specialising in providing services for social networks.

Slide is a gaming firm, whilst Jambool provides virtual currencies and payments. Google has also reportedly invested in another social network gaming firm called Zynga.

Many believe the acquisitions are a sign that the search giant is about to launch another social network. Some commentators have already given the rumoured product a name: Google.me.

It already owns two other social networks; Google Buzz, launched in February 2010 and its first foray known as Orkut.

Buzz proved controversial when it linked up with people’s Gmail accounts without asking their consent, meaning that their contacts were publicly visible.

On his prediction that people may change their names, Mr Schmidt said: “I don’t believe society understands what happens when everything is available, knowable and recorded by everyone all the time… I mean we really have to think about these things as a society.”

However, Mr Schmidt said that Google would likely store more personal information about its users in the future.

At the moment, he said, “we know roughly who you are, roughly what you care about, roughly who your friends are.”

But, according to some experts, his concerns about the future are “overstated”.

“The idea that everything is stored online is not true,” social media consultant Suw Charman-Anderson told BBC News.

“It will be quite some time before that can become true because of the enormity of the internet.”

Archives such as Google Cache, which store older versions of websites, are selective, she added.

“Google Cache is a snapshot taken periodically of some of the internet. It’s very hit and miss at the moment.”

While companies specialising in “cleaning up” internet profiles already exist, Ms Charman-Anderson argued that social attitudes towards personal content on the web needed to change instead.

“There’s always a lag between the introduction of new technology and the development of a set of social norms around the behaviour that the technology encourages,” she said.

“As a society, we are just going have to become a bit more forgiving of the follies of youth.”

The process of cleaning up our database is automated by a plug in called WP Database.  this marvelous lil plug in cleans up, repairs, and even optimizes our database in seperate operations before we back it up in gzip format.  there are alot of others out there too – like the one in the video. Check this out, it’s a Designer Pitbull – just like the ones they launch on your blog database. yes there was a pit bull in each of the videos, and ?

uh huhhh it’s just that easy.  in 10 minutes from download to head bob – you too can have a Clean and Backed Up Database..

No More Wobble Wobble; or Shakey Shakey..

In case anybody asked you where you got this advice; just tell em, I got it from My Mama ASID.  These instructions are  from the WordPress Codex.  which is by all wp bloggers definition the holy grail of WordPress.

Backup using cPanel X

cPanel is a popular control panel used by many web host. The backup feature can be used to backup your MySql database. Do not generate a full backup. Look for ‘Download a MySQL Database Backup’ and click the name of the database. A *.gz file will be downloaded to your local drive.

There is no need to unzip this file to restore it. Using the same cPanel program, browse to the gz file and upload it. Once the upload is complete, the bottom of the browser will indicate dump complete. If you are uploading to a new host, you will need to recreate the database user along with the matching password. If you change the password, make the corresponding change in the wp-config.php file.

Yeah Baby, I said Clean Database which will make your blog run like the optimum info tool that you intended it to be.  you see over the course of writing and making edits to our blogs, we create fragments and byte issues. these are the real culprits of blog slowdowns and eventual failures. even if your host looses it’s data you can save yours.

Wowwww – talk about shock and awe..

When this popped up in the mail first reaction was Wtf ?  now how does a royalty find the author ?  oooo, I see this is meant to be used by students and others who need a fast reprint of a pre-existing book. but how does this save paper ? maybe it’s not meant to save paper but to allow more books to be printed in a wider market ? What are they talking about here.?

This thing prints library quality books for about .1 cent per page. that is unbelievable. this thing eats trees. omg when is the world going to finally get it ? The inventors of this thing tell you nothing about it’s in use statistics.

We also see that the University of Michigan and lots of other institutions are using it for both reprints and initial printing runs.

How is this not plagerism ? I am totally confused because there is no discussion of how the author is paid from these reprints.

we see that any book in Google’s huge database is available through this machine as well. wow.. that means they are bringing back books that have been out of print for ages. Hmmmm.. now it’s getting interesting to me. I wonder if this transcription will effect the material that is reprinted – from older versions, to adapt to todays’ language changes and standards ? that in itself is enough to blow major alarms for me.

McNally Jackson Will Soon Be Printing Books While You Wait @ The New York Observer…

By the time 2011 rolls around, Nolita’s McNally Jackson Books will have an Espresso Book Machine, the Xerox-like on-demand device that prints a fully bound book in mere minutes. Currently McNally will order a book for a customer if a desired copy is not on hand. With the EBM, the store would be able to print one out right there. Buyer John Turner sees the machine as a way to expand inventory. It also reduces the hassle and wait time associated with ordering books by request.

The tech to print books on demand has been around for awhile, I wonder if it will just be too late to gain as much adoption as e-readers (Kindles, iPads, phones, etc). Read the Full Story at Makezine »

WikiLeaks says it won’t be threatened by Pentagon

STOCKHOLM — WikiLeaks will publish its remaining 15,000 Afghan war documents within a month, despite warnings from the U.S. government, the organization’s founder said Saturday.

The Pentagon has said that secret information will be even more damaging to security and risk more lives than WikiLeaks’ initial release of some 76,000 war documents.

“This organization will not be threatened by the Pentagon or any other group,” Julian Assange told reporters in Stockholm. “We proceed cautiously and safely with this material.”

In an interview with The Associated Press, he said that if U.S. defense officials want to be seen as promoting democracy then they “must protect what the United States’ founders considered to be their central value, which is freedom of the press.”

“For the Pentagon to be making threatening demands for censorship of a press organization is a cause for concern, not just for the press but for the Pentagon itself,” the Australian added.

He said WikiLeaks was about halfway though a “line-by-line review” of the 15,000 documents and that “innocent parties who are under reasonable threat” would be redacted from the material.

“It should be approximately two weeks before that process is complete,” Assange told AP. “There will then be a journalistic review, so you’re talking two weeks to a month.”

Wikileaks would be working with media partners in releasing the remaining documents, he said, but declined to name them.

The first files in WikiLeaks’ “Afghan War Diary” laid bare classified military documents covering the war in Afghanistan from 2004 to 2010. The release angered U.S. officials, energized critics of the NATO-led campaign, and drew the attention of the Taliban, which has promised to use the material to track down people it considers traitors.

That has aroused the concern of several human rights group operating in Afghanistan and the Paris-based media watchdog Reporters Without Borders, which has accused WikiLeaks of recklessness. Jean-Francois Julliard, the group’s secretary-general, said Thursday that WikiLeaks showed “incredible irresponsibility” when posting the documents online.

WikiLeaks describes itself as a public service organization for whistleblowers, journalists and activists.

“There are no easy choices for our organization,” Assange said. “We have a duty to the people most directly affected by this material, the people of Afghanistan and the course of this war which is killing hundreds every week. We have a duty to the broader historical record and its accuracy and its integrity. And we have a duty to our sources to try and protect them where we can.”

Assange told the AP that while no country has taken steps to shut down WikiLeaks, some have been gathering intelligence on the organization.

“There has been extensive surveillance in Australia, there has been surveillance in the United Kingdom, there has been the detainment of one of our volunteers who entered the United States a week and a half ago. But he was released after four hours,” Assange said. He didn’t give details of that incident.

Today we look at two reports on how information is effecting our daily lives. most of us didn’t take twitter seriously until we started to see the things it could effect in our daily lives.

Break ins, break ups, divorces, and firings have all occurred due to Twitter and other social networking faux pas. You’d think that everyone would understand that posting that you’ll be out of town over the weekend to the world, is like leaving the key in the lock for your criminal pals, literally; to come shop at your house.

the fact that another social networking pal turned the criminal in from the pic on their facebook page, makes it doubly ironic. this is the age of you type it you live it forever.

Most of us have forgotten that anything you put on the internet is there forever..

Have you heard of the wayback machine ? well Internet Archives has one and it’s very useful for many purposes. such as finding information that may have disappeared or been revised. it was used recently in the case of the TSA Manual that was left openly exposed on the Internet. Apparently some smarty pants got the manual and created a mirror to it and voila everything that the TSA doesn’t want you to know was exposed for everyone to see in black and white. it caused quite a stir and forced the TSA and other security operatives in the USA to tighten their security and re-asses their online storage of data.

Twitter encourages an informality that can catch people out, warns Bill Thompson

Nothing said online is really private, says Bill Thompson

Online tools and services such as Twitter and Facebook create a social space that encourages informality, rapid responses and the sort of conversation that typically takes place between friends in contexts that are either private or public-private, like the street, pub or cafe.

One example of the sort of casual interaction that we increasingly find online is the way that the government’s Digital Champion Martha Lane Fox uses textspeak in her tweets and is happy to send a message like:

when she is about to meet Arts Minister Ed Vaizey.

Unfortunately, online interaction has other characteristics which are very different from those of a casual conversation in a cafe.

Not least the fact that many services make comments visible to large numbers of people and search engines ensure that a permanent record is kept of every inane observation, spiteful aside or potentially libellous comment on a respected public figure.

This is something that TV nutritionist Gillian McKeith has just discovered the hard way, and her experience offers a salutary lesson for anyone who wants to use social media tools to enhance their reputation rather than expose themselves to public ridicule.

It all started last week when Twitter user @rachelemoody made a remark about Bad Science, Dr Ben Goldacre’s much admired book on the poor state of media coverage of medicine and science. The book includes a chapter that criticises Gillian McKeith’s work:

Can’t sleep – so excited about the next chapter of #BadScience – It’s the one on Gillian McKeith. (not Phd).

The comment, which was publicly visible, garnered an angry response from the Twitter account @gillianmckeith accusing its author of anti-Americanism because she questioned the status of Gillian McKeith’s doctorate, which was gained by correspondence course from a non-accredited US college.

After a few more disparaging comments @gillianmckeith then tweeted:

How sad a life to enjoy reading lies about another by an ass who makes money from pharmaceutical giants.

Ben Goldacre followed up by tweeting:

hi @gillianmckeith, i’m writing a piece about you libelling me in the context of #libelreform, can you pls contact ben@badscience.net thnks

One model of the mind describes its powers as arising from a vastly interconnected network

“You would be amazed at how much of the current experimental neuroscience literature is dominated by ‘top down-bottom up thinking’, which goes back to the 19th Century, especially in neurology,” Professor Swanson told BBC News.

“The bottom line is that no matter what you might think, the circuitry we’ve shown – that specific set of structural connections – has not been demonstrated before.”

The brain appears to be a vastly interconnected network much like the Internet, according to new research.

That runs counter to the 19th-Century “top-down” view of brain structure.

A novel technique to track signals across tiny brain regions has revealed connections between regions associated with stress, depression and appetite.

The research, which has been published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal, may lead to a full map of the nervous system.

Larry Swanson and Richard Thompson from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, US, isolated a small section of a rat’s brain in the nucleus accumbens – a brain region long associated with pleasure and reward.

Their technique hinges on the injection of “tracers” at precise points in the brain tissue. These are molecules that do not interfere with the movement of signals across the tissue, but can be illuminated and identified using a microscope.

NY Daily News Reports That A WikiLeaks spokesman vowed on Saturday to release more top secret U.S. files — despite the Pentagon’s push to silence the controversial whistle-blower website.

“I can assure you that we will keep publishing documents — that’s what we do,” a spokesman who called himself Daniel Schmitt told The Associated Press.

The website’s promise to reveal more files was a direct challenge to U.S. military demands. The Pentagon on Thursday asked that WikiLeaks “do the right thing” by canceling plans to publish more classified military files and removing posted documents relating to the war in Afghanistan.

Schmitt said publishing the documents helps hold government’s accountable.

“Knowledge about ongoing issues like the war in Afghanistan is the only way to help create something like safety,” Schmitt said. “Hopefully with this understanding, public scrutiny will then influence governments to develop better politics.”

The website has become a thorn in the side of the U.S. military. Earlier in the year, it released disturbing video footage of Iraqi civilians being gunned down by U.S. helicopters.

And more recently, it released 77,000 files spanning six years that detailed U.S. effort in Afghanistan, intelligence about the Taliban and military tactics.

The Pentagon has said the files could endanger Afghan informants.

WikiLeaks also claims to have 15,000 more files that could prove damaging to the U.S. military. Last week, it posted an encrypted file entitled “Insurance,” leading to speculation it was prepared to leak them

Quantico, Virginia (CNN) reports — Activists rallied outside the Marine Corps base at Quantico, Virginia, Sunday to applaud the man military officials suspect leaked scores of military documents to the WikiLeaks website — a 22-year-old Army private named Bradley Manning.

“We are here to say that if he, indeed, was the whistle-blower, then we are proud of him,” said Medea Benjamin, founder of anti-war group Code Pink. “In the United States that I know and love, transparency is a positive thing.”

Manning, who served as an intelligence analyst in Iraq, is the military’s focus in the investigation into the largest-ever intelligence leak in American history, to WikiLeaks.org.

He is being detained at Quantico pending a military investigation in a separate case, in which he’s charged with eight violations of the U.S. Criminal Code, including for allegedly leaking a secret military video from the Iraq war to WikiLeaks.

Outside the Quantico gates, about 80 protesters chanted

“Bradley Manning told their tale, war criminals off to jail” and held signs calling on the military to “Free Bradley Manning.”

Many wore pink and seemed out-of-place in a small community where people sported military haircuts and displayed Marine bumper stickers on their cars.

Ray McGovern, who said he was formerly a CIA analyst, lauded Manning for allegedly releasing information about America’s “war of aggression”.

“What Bradley Manning has done is to give us as Americans the opportunity to realize what’s really going on there,” McGovern said.

“If Americans can’t realize now that they have the ground truth, literally the ground truth from these Army reports, if they can’t realize and move to end these kinds of wars, then there’s very little hope for our children or our grandchildren.”

About 300 yards away, a handful of counter-protesters wearing the military’s trademark olive green held a poster that showed Manning with bloody hands. They called the leak treasonous.

“If Bradley Manning is the one that leaked these documents, he has already put his fellow soldiers at risk,” said Jim Hanson, who writes for the pro-military website BlackFive.

“I think the military and the government have some things that should be kept secret. The public knows that … There is no ‘right to know’ secret information.”

AP Interview: WikiLeaks to publish new documents

BERLIN — The online whistle-blower WikiLeaks said it will continue to publish more secret files from governments around the world despite U.S. demands to cancel plans to release classified military documents.

“I can assure you that we will keep publishing documents — that’s what we do,” a WikiLeaks spokesman, who says he goes by the name Daniel Schmitt in order to protect his identity, told The Associated Press in an interview Saturday.

Schmitt said he could not comment on any specific documents but asserted that the publication of classified documents about the Afghanistan war directly contributed to the public’s understanding of the conflict.

“Knowledge about ongoing issues like the war in Afghanistan is the only way to help create something like safety,” Schmitt said. “Hopefully with this understanding, public scrutiny will then influence governments to develop better politics.”

He rejected allegations that the group’s publication of leaked U.S. government documents was a threat to America’s national security or put lives at risk.

“For this reason, we conveyed a request to the White House prior to the publication, asking that the International Security Assistance Force provide us with reviewers,” Schmitt said. “That request remains open. However, the Pentagon has stated that it is not interested in ‘harm minimization’ and has not contacted us, directly, or indirectly to discuss this offer.”

Have you recently clicked on a link and — surprise! — been redirected to a nine-minute YouTube clip of a hip-swiveling saxophone player? Congrats — you’ve been “saxrolled” and seen the Epic Sax Guy.

It is a new variant of “rickrolling,” and you should be afraid. Very afraid.

Here’s some background: After the Moldovian band Sunstroke Project recently performed on TV, some jokester by the name of libb3n edited the video to focus on saxophonist Sergey Stepanov — who is provocatively thrusting his pelvis while playing — and uploaded the result on YouTube.

Worse, a few seconds of Stepanov’s gyrations are looped over and over for 8 minutes and 53 seconds as the same four-second, saxxy rhythm plays over and over in the background.

The Euro dance-pop itself is strangely hypnotic and, like the infamous earworms in Star Trek’s “The Wrath of Khan,” will transcend language barriers to bury itself in your brain — whether you like it or not.

The new meme is an evolution of rickrolling, the 25 million-strong habit of misdirecting people to ’80s icon Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up” music video. Rickrolling started in 2007 as pranksters fooled people into clicking on links to hot topics at the time.

Today, the Epic Sax Guy video has surprised Web users who clicked on links promising a trailer to “The Avengers” or a preview of the iPhone 5.

If you’d like to find the origin of this evil, look no further than Sunstroke Project’s song “Run Away” (about 38-40 seconds in), which the band performed at the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 in Oslo, Norway.

Sunstroke Project and Moldova didn’t do so well in the contest — they finished 22nd out of 25 entrants — but Epic Sax Guy already has a Facebook following of more than 21,000 people.

No doubt Epic Sax Guy’s 15 minutes of fame will be up soon. But his four seconds of looped music, and all that hip thrusting, will live on forever in our nightmares.

All in all 2010 has been a marvelous year so far. filled with good tidings, constant renewals and challenges that rewarded us. Gifts of goodness are the kind that we most cherish; like good health, good spirit, and good life. the chance to see a little more of the wonder of this lifetime. We’ve been together through thick and thin. from the begining he knew that I was a struggler, and didn’t like those who didn’t struggle to get what they want. I believe that Dreams are possibilities that you can Manifest if you so desire. Hard work and Perseverance, Patience and Gratefulness are the best tools for a life filled with gifts; from a higher plane.

We met when I was leaving town to start over in Atlanta in 83′. I moved on to Florida, but still when I came to town, I checked for him. He told me the other day, that was what made him realize how serious of a woman I am. Then when I returned to complete my MS at MSU in Lansing, I came back to see him, and he was happy to see me.

I’d drive down from Lansing about once a month to visit my family and see him; until I graduated. the day I did I was so out of Lansing. I asked him if he would help me move back to the D and that was it. we’ve been together ever since.

Over the years, which are now decades; we’ve had alot of cars, and been alot of places; always together. I’m glad that Patience was the key that made this all possible; because it also gave me another wonderful gift – A Livitity of Productiveness and Pride. Because of these crackpots we started doing our spring cleaning again. yes again.

When asking for help with our spammer, we got a list of files from our hosting company to search for possible injected or objectionable code.  so that’s exactly what we did – we found them; and even though they were clean now, we decided not to take any chances.  We took them straight to the hole, for three points, WOOOOOOOOSH !

it seems our little hacker cracker wackers have tried to make their presence known in the most dangerous way. can you imagine they actually have started attempting to hack into all of my acounts - including the registrar for my domains.  now that’s what you call dangerous.

When we received an email from our registrar about a change we knew nothing about;  on our trusty droid.  we sprang into action immediately.

First we phoned our registrar about the note to verify it’s authenticity. it was not a change that we had requested so that meant trouble in dodge city kids.  the account rep at the host, put our account on security alert and that allowed us to change a few things and then lock it downnnnnn.

No more foolin around with these folks because they just seem to want to waste our time and force us to be distacted from what we would normally be doing. we did narrow it down a little further tho and it’s given us the ability to decide how to proceede with our action phase.  this is not going to be easy, or fast – but it will be effective.  Clearly this hacker is targeting US Personally.

Our Second Step was to Raise the Hammer – That’s Right, The BAN Hammer is back in Full Effect.

It’s Hillarious when you have to go to the extent of banning an entire ip section in order to lock someone out.  Yes I Said an Entire IP Section.

Clearly it’s a sad statement of existence when you spend your offtime hacking someones blog, because you have no other interests. that starts inside the brain and personality of a person; who has little other way to express their frustration with the world. It’s sad but demonstrated daily by these consistent attacks.

Hopefully if things pan out as we see them, this hacker will have all the louis vuitton and michael jordan faus shoes and bags to sew; that he can get his hands on.  As you can see in china there is a need for slave labor; and sometimes folks who commit petty crimes go to jail, where they spend their days manufacturing dollar store merchandize. or even worse, they get assigned to the IPad factory, where they apparently at least have the liberty to  decide when to jump.  HA !

Our digital footprint should be allowed to fade over time thinks researcherPrivacy could be enhanced if data was allowed to fade, suggests research.

Dutch researcher Dr Harold van Heerde is looking into ways to gradually “degrade” the information that sites gather about visitors.

Slowly swapping details for more general information can help guard against accidental disclosure, he said.

“There are so many weak points in security that you can never be sure that your data is safe,” said Dr van Heerde.

‘Data danger’The research project carried out by Dr van Heerde from the Centre for Telematics and Information Technology (CTIT) at the University of Twente looked into ways to change the way databases manage information about users and customers.

The ability of those databases to gather information tempts companies and organisations to hoard information just in case it proves valuable, Dr van Heerde told BBC News.

The dangers of having data about us stored more or less permanently in many different places around the web have been proved many times when that information is leaked by accident or design, said Dr van Heerde.

“People make mistakes, people can be bribed,” he said. “You cannot protect this data, you cannot be sure it’s not been disclosed, privacy policies are simply too weak.”

Instead of simply refusing to use services that gather data, Dr van Heerde believes it would be better for people to surrender data knowing that there was a policy that determined how it degraded over time.

At initial use to secure a transaction or get useful information from a search all relevant details might be stored. Subsequently details would slowly be swapped for more general information.

In the case of a location-specific search information about a user’s exact GPS co-ordinates could be swapped for a street name, then a neighbourhood and then just a city.

“You can slowly replace details with a more general value,” he said.

As well as limiting the impact of any disclosure, such a policy might also force companies to be more explicit about what data they gather and what they will use it for.

“In most cases there’s no good reason for them storing data for so long,” he said.

What is Juneteenth Day all About ?

HAPPY JUNETEENTH DAY AMERICA – IT’S AFRICAN AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE DAY

Today we take a break and celebrate. Be sure you take a moment and remember what freedom really means TODAY. Because it’s not free for anyone EVER. We certainly support the premise that Juneteenth should be a national holiday; and as such we present a teach in on Juneteenth – so you know how it all began.

Juneteenth should be made national holiday

For the past several years, The Daily News has been asking the president of the United States to make Juneteenth a national holiday. Juneteenth, of course, marks the day slaves in Texas learned they were free.

Those who are lobbying for a national holiday are not asking for a paid day off. They are asking for a commemorative day, like Flag Day on June 14 or Patriot Day on Sept. 11. All that would take is a presidential proclamation. Both the U.S. House and Senate have endorsed the idea.

Why is a national celebration for an event that occurred in Galveston and originally affected only those in a single state such a good idea?

Because Juneteenth has become a symbol of the end of slavery. No matter how much we may regret the tragedy of slavery and wish it weren’t a part of this nation’s story, it is. Denying the truth about the past is always unwise.

For those who don’t know, Juneteenth started in Galveston. On Jan. 1, 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. But the order was meaningless until it could be enforced. It wasn’t until June 19, 1865 — after the Confederacy had been defeated and Union troops landed in Galveston — that the slaves in Texas were told they were free.

People all across the country get this story. That’s why Juneteenth celebrations have been growing all across the country. The celebration started in Galveston. But its significance has come to be understood far, far beyond the island, and far beyond Texas.

The holiday is a perfect solution to that uncomfortable question: What do you do about an awful legacy?

You do what people in Galveston do year after year. You join together to celebrate its end and to pray for reconciliation and healing.

How can a national day of reconciliation and healing not be a good thing?

WikiLeaks inspired “New media haven” proposal passes Icelands’ Parliament Today

The WikiLeaks advised proposal to build an international
“new media haven” in Iceland, with the world’s strongest
press and whistleblower protection laws, and a “Nobel” prize for
for Freedom of Expression, has unaminously passed the
Icelandic Parliament.

50 votes were cast in favor, zero against, one abstained. Twelve
members of parliament were not present. Vote results are available

One of the inspirations for the proposal was the dramatic August 2009 gagging of
of Iceland’s national broadcaster, RUV by Iceland’s then largest bank, Kaupthing:

the opinion of the parliament’s general affairs committee

Julian Assange’ is being Hunted By the CIA – Why ?  Because He Has The Goods on the US Dept of Defense.

Adrian Lamo, a computer hacker with whom Manning had corresponded, reported Manning after the intelligence specialist told Lamo he had leaked to Wikileaks some 260,000 secret State Department records, in addition to the “Collateral Damage” video and a document describing Wikileaks as a security threat. Manning reportedly told Lamo the hundreds of thousands of State Department documents he leaked to the whistleblower website detailed “almost criminal political back dealings.”

If you’ve forgotten, Wikileaks released the video as they said they would in April.  it blew the army off it’s asses and into the office of the president.  the front page Blog and News splash put the war back onto everyone’s minds.

Hopefully we can do that once more today.

The BBC Reports : Whistle-blowing website Wikileaks has said that the detention of an alleged confidential source by the US military does not compromise its work.

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange told BBC News that other potential whistle-blowers should not be put off from sending material to the site.

The US has detained US military analyst Bradley Manning on suspicion of leaking classified material to the site.

Mr Assange would not confirm whether Mr Manning was a source.

“We endeavour to protect our sources,” he told BBC News. “We do not know if Mr Manning is a source, but we understand there are allegations that are being taken seriously so we are naturally inclined to try to defend [him].”

The US army in Iraq has said that Specialist (Spc) Manning was in Kuwait and had been “placed in pre-trial confinement for allegedly releasing classified information”.

One video reportedly posted to the site by Mr Manning shows a US Apache helicopter killing up to 12 people – including two Reuters journalists – during an attack in Baghdad in 2007. Two children were also seriously injured in the assault on the group, which contained some armed men.

Meet Adrian Lamo – Federal Criminal, Hacker and Snitch

This is from the person who turned Spc Manning In – The Hacker / Snitch, who admits it proudly – Mr Adrian Lamo.

Hackers often pride themselves on their anti-authoritarian and counter culture stance.

So news that former high-profile hacker Adrian Lamo had turned over an Army intelligence analyst to authorities was met with derision by some.

“A lot of people have labelled me a snitch,” Mr Lamo told BBC News. “I guess I deserve that on this one but not as a generality.”

“This was a very hard decision for me.”

Mr Lamo is a former hacker, who exposed security flaws at the New York Times, Yahoo and Microsoft. After a brief stint hiding from the FBI, Mr Lamo was imprisoned and fined. He now works as a journalist and security analyst.

‘By the book’

Mr Lamo says that he was responsible for reporting Specialist (SPC) Brad Manning to the military authorities after the analyst boasted to him that he had handed over thousands of classified documents and classified military video to whistle-blower site Wikileaks.

Huffington Post reports :  Wikileaks founder Julian Assange is being hunted by Pentagon investigators who believe that he may be close to releasing classified State Department documents that “could do serious damage to national security,” the Daily Beast reports.

According to information obtained by the Daily Beast from government officials, the Pentagon fears Assange may have received the secret State Department communications from Army intelligence analyst Bradley Manning, who was recently arrested for leaking the “Collateral Damage” video to Wikileaks, among other materials.

Adrian Lamo, a computer hacker with whom Manning had corresponded, reported Manning after the intelligence specialist told Lamo he had leaked to Wikileaks some 260,000 secret State Department records, in addition to the “Collateral Damage” video and a document describing Wikileaks as a security threat. Manning reportedly told Lamo the hundreds of thousands of State Department documents he leaked to the whistleblower website detailed “almost criminal political back dealings.”

The Daily Beast writes that the classified cables that Manning may have obtained–and shared with Assange–”went out over interagency computer networks available to the Army and contained information related to American diplomatic and intelligence efforts in the war zones in Afghanistan and Iraq, the diplomat said.”

According to Wired, Manning told Lamo of the leaked documents, “Hillary Clinton, and several thousand diplomats around the world are going to have a heart attack when they wake up one morning, and find an entire repository of classified foreign policy is available, in searchable format, to the public.”

Wikileaks has established a reputation for publishing leaked material since its first appearance on the web in 2006.

In November 2009, it published what it said were 573,000 intercepted pager messages sent during the 9/11 attacks in the United States. 

Previously it had posted a list of names and addresses of people said to belong to the British National Party (BNP) and a copy of the Standard Operating Procedures for Camp Delta, a document that detailed restrictions placed on prisoners at Guantanamo Bay. Earlier this year, the website published a 2008 Pentagon report that said the site was considered a “threat to the US army”.

The document says that “the possibility that current employees or moles within [the Department of Defence] or elsewhere in the US government are providing sensitive or classified information to Wikileaks.org cannot be ruled out”.

It goes on to say that the “identification, exposure, termination of employment, criminal prosecution, legal action against current or former insiders, leakers, or whistleblowers could potentially… deter others considering similar actions from using [Wikileaks]“.

The US government later confirmed to the BBC that the documents were genuine.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The U.S. Defense Department must be able to operate freely in cyberspace amid dangers of “remote sabotage,” an Army general tapped to streamline offensive and defensive computer operations said on Thursday.

The potential for sabotage and destruction is “something we must treat very seriously,” General Keith Alexander said in his first public remarks since the new U.S. Cyber Command was activated on May 21.

“In short, we face a dangerous combination of known and unknown vulnerabilities, strong adversary capabilities and weak situational awareness,” he told an audience at the Center for Strategic & International Studies, a private research group in Washington.

“Our Department of Defense must be able to operate freely and defend its resources in cyberspace,” Alexander said.

U.S. foes will find the weakest link and exploit it, whether it is public or privately owned and operated, he said.

“America’s very wealth and strength make it a target in cyberspace,” Alexander said.

Senior aides to President Barack Obama are weighing such issues as how the laws of warfare apply to a digital attack routed through a neutral country, he said.

UK scientists claim to have developed laser technology able to sense hidden explosives.

The technology could help to detect landmines and roadside bombs and to improve airport security.

The team from University of St Andrews produced a laser by “pumping” a type of plastic called polyfluorene with photons from another light source.

They found the laser reacted with vapours from explosives such as TNT.

The work was published in the journal Advanced Functional Materials.

Graham Turnbull, a physicist at the University of St Andrew’s in Fife, UK, is one of the authors of the study.

He explained that the researchers created a mechanism able to sense TNT-like molecules frequently used in explosives at extremely low concentrations – less than 10 parts per billion.

Then We hear that visiting Porn Websites can be much more dangerous than you think.

the most recent statistics suggest that:

1. approximately 12% of all websites offer pornography of one sort or another
2. 70% of men under 24 browse these sites.
3. the deeper statistics show that White, Indian and Arabic Men are the chief visitors.
4. apparently Black men don’t seem as into the internet for porn. (side-eye)

According to a friend who is a manager at a local sams’ club their purchase and return of laptops by men under 25 has skyrocketed. The Men apparently buy them; use them a few days, then they want to retun them. They all say it’s because the machines locked up.

suuuuuuure they did buddy, suuuuuure they did..

This dramatic upswing in exchanges appears linked to porn sites. the hard drives are inspected by the stores’ own inhouse techs before they are returned; and if keys are located that came from a porn site – the return is not accepted.

Sams’ club is a part of Walmarts and they are fighting this new spate of round and round recycling by porn addicts; by saying no. this is probably going on at other retailers, but we were able to confirm it by talking to the manager at both a Sams’ club and a local Walmart.  They were emphatic in their policies.

The BBC Reports : Visitors to porn sites are at serious risk of being exploited by cyber criminals, a study has suggested.

It found that many sites harboured malware or used “shady” practices to squeeze money out of their visitors. By creating their own porn sites researchers found that many consumers were vulnerable to known bugs and loopholes.

Competition among porn sites makes the online adult industry ripe for abuse by hi-tech criminals.

“They have almost inadvertently created a whole ecosystem that’s easy to abuse for cyber crime on a large scale,” said Dr Gilbert Wondracek, a computer security expert from the International Secure System Lab, which led the study. “For the average user it might be hard to tell an honest porn site from a dishonest porn site until you click on something,” he said.

Dr Wondracek recommended that anyone visiting porn sites keep their security software up to date and use the “safe browsing” modes found in many browsing programs. More than 90% of the 35,000 pornographic domains analysed in the study were free sites.

The researchers analysed the 269,000 websites hosted on the 35,000 domains to see which hosted malicious software. About 3.23% of these sites were booby-trapped with adware, spyware and viruses.

Many others used “shady” practices to keep visitors onsite. These included javascript catchers that made it hard for people to leave a page.

Others use scripts that re-direct visitors so when they click on a link they do not see the video or image they were expecting but are passed to an affiliate site.

The vast majority of sites engage in this trading of traffic or clicks, said Dr Wondracek.

“Visitors are being abused as click bots,” he said.

As most sites were free, the only resource they could exploit as a revenue source was this traffic.

“It’s cut-throat competition,” said Dr Wondracek. “Everybody tries to get as much traffic as possible.”

Finding victims

Traffic is used in many different ways. Popular sites sell it to those looking for an audience, some is used to direct visitors to affiliates who provide content and sometimes it is used to boost rankings in search engine indexes.

It could also be a great way for hi-tech criminals to get a ready source of victims, said Dr Wondracek.

To test this idea the researchers created two adult sites of their own, populated them with free content from porn producers and spent $160 (£108) to get traffic piped to these sites.

Analysis of the 49,000 visitors sent to their sample sites showed that 20,000 were using a computer and browser combination that was vulnerable to at least one known exploit.

“As an attacker you want to make your life easier,” said Dr Wondracek. “If you can have these 20,000 people come to a place instantly, why not?”

With many porn sites appearing in the top 100 most popular sites on the web this could mean that huge numbers of people are caught out when they browse for adult content.

Book asks: Is Internet ruining our minds?

NEW YORK (Reuters) – When author Nicholas Carr began researching his book on whether the Internet is ruining our minds, he restricted his online access and e-mail and turned off his Twitter and Facebook accounts.

His new book “The Shallows: What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains” argues the latest technology renders us less capable of deep thinking. Carr found himself so distracted that he couldn’t work on the book while staying as connected, as is commonplace.

“I found my inability to concentrate a great disability,” Carr told Reuters in an interview.

“So, I abandoned my Facebook and Twitter accounts and throttled back on e-mail so I was only checking a couple of times a day rather than every 45 seconds. I found those types of things really did make a difference,” he said.

After initially feeling “befuddled” by his sudden lack of online connection, Carr said, within a couple of weeks he was able to stay focused on one task for a sustained period and, thankfully, able to do his work.

Carr wrote a 2008 Atlantic magazine piece that posed the controversial question “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” and wanted to dig deeper into how the Internet alters our minds.

His book examines the history of reading and the science of how using different media changes our brains. Exploring how society shifted from an oral tradition to the printed word and to the Internet, he details how the brain rewires itself to adjust to new information sources.

Reading on the Internet has fundamentally changed how we use our brains, he writes.

Facing a torrent of text, photos, video, music and links to other web pages combined with incessant interruptions from text messages, e-mails, Facebook updates, Tweets, blogs and RSS feeds, our minds have become used to skimming, browsing and scanning information.

As a result, we have developed sharper skills at making fast decisions, particularly visual ones, Carr says.

But now most of us infrequently read books, long essays or articles that would help us focus, concentrate and be introspective and contemplative, Carr writes.

Enough people get spam from this company daily to make this a larger complaint, but we’d have to gather together to ask internic to do a lil something about them and their spam issue.

1. Find a good email spam manager which allows using filters; such as in Gmail
2. Never post your email in text form – yes text form; bots can scrape it up and will add it to their database of sellable emails
3. Use Disposable Email addresses to stop spam
4. Use personal email addresses for personal mail; and business email for your business use. keep things seperate and that helps keep them simple
5. One of the best ways is to use a long complicated email address like dontspammeyoua-holes@ somemailsomeplace dot com.

• Ages 21 – 35 make up 53% of the entire blogging population

• Ages 20 and younger make up 20.2 % of the entire blogging population

• Ages 36 – 50 Make up 19.4 % of the entire blogging population

• Ages 51 and older make up 7.1% of the entire blogging population

• Women make up 50.9% of all bloggers

• Men make up 49.1% of all bloggers

• The US has 29.22 % of the Blogosphere, followed by

This is quite interesting indeed when you consider who your readers are.  I expect to see a boom in blogging from China very soon. especially in tech areas. the innovation coming out of Chinas’ technological schools is astounding.  China appears to be on the cutting edge of all forms of technology – so why shouldn’t blogging be included.

Lately we can hardly be sure of who our readers are; but we suspect that based on reading patterns we get older readers. probably more women, as our readers take time and read our pieces, watch videos and some occassionally comment (wink*wink) to engage with us.

Initially we never considered who our audience would eventually pan out to be. we didn’t even think about it until we first made the changes to this blog to turn it from a podcast to a tech blog. we flexed into tech easily because we covered it already. all we needed to do was develop a theme and continue with it.

We don’t do paid posts, or much advertising outside of the blogging community, because it seems like more of a distraction. with hits being kind of hit and miss these days, we’re thinking of adding this blog as a blog within our main blog – as a tech niche. it would give us more time to write our main blog. also it would expose our mainblogs readers to more of our tech updates. we’re still scratching our heads and thinking about it. we aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.  So rest assured we’ll be here, uncovering it all.

A Mom finds her Kidnapped kids on facebook after 15 years missing. That was wonderful. after all the changes made to Facebook lately, most of us wouldn’t think that it could actually do what it was intended to do – connect long lost people.

After 15 years, mother uses Facebook to find her missing children

June 5, 2010 18:06:00 – The Associated Press

SAN BERNARDINO, CALIF. — A Southern California mother whose two children were reported missing 15 years ago has tracked them down in Florida using Facebook.

San Bernardino Deputy District Attorney Kurt Rowley says Faustino Utrera, the father of the boy and girl, took off with them in 1995 when they were ages 2 and 3.

Rowley says recently the mother typed one of the children’s names into Facebook and a listing for her daughter, now a teenager, came up.

The mom contacted authorities, who tracked the Facebook profile to Orlando, Florida.

Utrera was arrested and charged with kidnapping and violating child custody orders.

The Florida Department of Children & Families says the mom is trying to build a new relationship with the children.
