This issue is dedicated to NowPublic‘s coverage of Haiti‘s devastating 7.0 quake that hit the Caribbean nation Tuesday Jan 12. An estimated 50,000 have died with 3 million wounded or displaced. The quake crushed 3 hospitals and the airport blocking entry to medical supplies, food, water and rescue personnel.

Doctors Without Borders Treats 2000 in Haiti

Doctors without Borders (Medecins Sans Frontieres – MSF) has 800 doctors on the ground, having treated 2000 patients in Port-au-Prince with inflatable operating theatres, salvaged equipment, and mobile clinics. MSF does not accept government support and has an impecable record of disaster relief. To assist in their immediate efforts, donate now.

Haiti’s Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive is trying to cope with infrastructure collapse, malaria, disease from infection and unburied bodies in makeshift morgues and mass graves, communication issues, power outages, aftershocks, tsunami warnings, escaped prisoners, and identifying dead & missing.

Donating to Viable NGOs, Avoiding Web Scams

While celebrities like Brad Pitt and George Clooney donate to relief efforts, the unscupulous are taking advantage of generosity with scams. To avoid these, go with tested organizations like the Red Cross, Yele Haiti Foundation and the Salvation Army.The UN and UNICEF is also privotal, with 330 workers on the ground despite their 37 dead and others missing.
